Freeing tissue that has stayed restricted.
IASTM stands for instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization. Dr. Hochung Jeon uses specially shaped instruments to work along fascia, muscle, and tendon, finding the areas that have thickened and stopped sliding freely and mobilizing them. The instrument lets him feel and treat restriction at a depth and precision that fingertips alone struggle to reach.
IASTM is the broader instrument-assisted category, focused on mobilizing restricted tissue. ASTYM is one specific protocol within that family, aimed at tissue regeneration. They are related, they are not interchangeable, and which one you get depends on what your assessment finds.
Scan, mobilize, then move.
Scanning the Tissue
Dr. Jeon runs the instrument over the area to locate the restriction. Restricted fascia feels distinctly different under the instrument, and that is how the treatment area gets defined.
Mobilizing the Restriction
Controlled strokes are worked along the restricted tissue to break up the thickening and restore glide between the layers that had stopped moving independently.
Movement and Home Plan
You move through the newly available range straight away and leave with a short plan that stops the tissue tightening back down between visits.
